Self-Worth

True Self-Worth

For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; and when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.
Isaiah 53:2

If, you had lived in first-century Israel and crossed paths with Jesus in a market (before He became well known), you would not have given Him a second glance. Outwardly, there was little or nothing about Jesus’ external appearance that would have commended Him (Isaiah 53:2).

That wasn’t true of all of Israel’s kings. First Samuel 16:18 says that David, son of Jesse of Bethlehem, was a “fine-looking man” (NIV).

The Hebrew word for “fine-looking” is the same word translated “beauty” when describing what Jesus the Messiah lacked in Isaiah 53:2. David was fine-looking, but Jesus, apparently, was not. That’s a comfort, because it indicates that externalities are not the point. You can be beautiful, handsome, or plain in the world’s sight; and God can use you all the same. Why? Because it is Christ in us that matters (Galatians 2:20).

Our self-worth comes from how we reflect Christ, not how we are reflected in the mirror. Our appearance should enhance the image of Christ as an appropriate frame enhances a priceless painting.

"No man is qualified to be a disciple of Christ, until he has been divested of self"
John Calvin
